Have an idea for something not listed above? We are always open to new suggestions! Nothing is impossible.
How long does the process take?
This depends on a few things. Cleaning a fresh skull can take up to 6 months. The painting process itself usually takes about a month, but you might be placed on an awaiting list for up to another 6 months. However, we sometimes wait for skulls to arrive from the taxidermy and will frequently use this time to work on items already in our possession, further down in the queue. Estimating a time frame is often not possible, and you might have to practice some patience, but we do promise that it will be worth the wait!
What if I don't have a skull but want to commission a piece?
AR Skulls has many skulls in stock! But if you request a skull that we don’t have we will source a skull of your choice for you and send your pictures and pricing before we make the purchase.
Why does the skull need to be cleaned by a specific taxidermist?
If you were to dip your finder in olive oil and then attempt to stick a plaster on, there is absolutely no way that it will stay on for more than a few seconds. The same principle applies to painted skulls/. All bones have oil in them that needs to be removed during the cleaning process. When cleaning a skull for painting, extra care has to be taken to make absolutely sure that none of the oil gets left behind, as this will cause the paint to start peeling after some time.
We also do not accept skulls that have been boiled to remove the flesh, as this destroys the integrity of the bone. For us, it's all about maceration.
I'm far away from Johannesburg. Can I still use AR Skulls?
Salt 'em and bag 'em and send your skull to us via courier. We will send it back to you once the work is complete.
At AR Skulls, we are dedicated to using only high-quality skulls and materials to ensure longevity.
Our skulls are cleaned by hand-picked taxidermists who pride themselves in producing small-scale, quality works on European mounts.
Correct preparation of the skulls is crucial to our process. It guarantees the following:
Longevity: Our skulls will not start peeling or disintegrating after a year or two.
Quality Horns.
Safety: Our unique skulls will not break free from the wall and tumble to the ground as long as instructions are followed carefully when mounting them.
For this reason, we are reluctant to work on skulls that have been cleaned by non-approved taxidermists. Should you wish to provide your own skull, we will assess the quality and may reject working on it if it does not conform to our standards.
